kingdom was connected to his vision of the destruction of Jerusalem as God’s judgment on Israel for her persistent refusal to turn back to the covenant. These were his prophetic particulars—his burden, if you will. He did not see beyond the destruction of Jerusalem but connected both the final judgment and the final deliverance with that event. In other words, like Jewish prophets of old,22 Jesus saw the next event—in his case, the destruction in A.D. 70—as the end event of history.
